Canada and Taiwan Build New Bridges Across AI, Advanced Therapeutics and Precision Health

Canada–Taiwan Partnering Forum at BIO Asia–Taiwan 2026 brought together innovators spanning AI-enabled drug discovery, advanced therapeutics, precision health and digital platforms, putting practical collaboration and joint R&D pathways at the centre of the conversation.

 

As biotechnology increasingly converges with artificial intelligence, advanced therapeutics and data-driven healthcare, the next generation of innovation will depend as much on international collaboration as scientific discovery.

That message came into sharp focus at the Canada–Taiwan Partnering Forum, held on July 17 during BIO Asia–Taiwan 2026 at TaiNEX 1, where Canadian life sciences organisations and emerging biotechnology companies presented technologies spanning the innovation continuum—from early discovery and antibody engineering to clinical development, neurological assessment and precision performance.

Opening the forum, Lesley-Ann Reed, Director, Trade and Investment at the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, set the stage for a day focused not simply on showcasing innovation, but on connecting complementary capabilities between the Canadian and Taiwanese life sciences ecosystems.

Building Companies Around Breakthrough Science

A featured presentation from Bethany Moir, Senior Director, Public Affairs at adMare BioInnovations, highlighted Canada's growing infrastructure for transforming promising science into globally competitive life sciences companies.

The discussion underscored a challenge shared by innovation ecosystems worldwide: scientific excellence alone does not guarantee commercial success. Translating discoveries into viable companies requires experienced talent, access to capital, development infrastructure and a network capable of supporting innovation through multiple stages of growth.

Acuitas Therapeutics brought another dimension to the discussion, highlighting the importance of enabling technologies in turning scientific breakthroughs into therapeutic possibilities. Together, the keynote perspectives reflected Canada's broader proposition as a life sciences ecosystem—combining discovery capabilities with platforms, company-building expertise and translational infrastructure.

AI Moves Upstream to De-risk Drug Development

The discovery segment demonstrated how artificial intelligence is increasingly being deployed at the earliest stages of drug development.

Dr. Richard Tseng, President of Proholistic Discovery Inc., presented InferALL, an inductive inference AI-driven drug development engine designed to identify risks earlier in the discovery process and potentially reduce costly failures later in clinical development.

As the pharmaceutical industry confronts persistently high development costs and clinical attrition, technologies capable of improving decision-making before candidates enter expensive trials are becoming strategically significant.

Meanwhile, Gordon Ngan, Chief Business Officer of KisoJi Biotechnology Inc., explored the potential of paratope mapping to uncover novel biology, demonstrating how deeper interrogation of antibody interactions could open new possibilities for therapeutic discovery and engineering.

Together, the presentations illustrated an important evolution in biotechnology: AI and computational technologies are no longer peripheral tools. They are becoming embedded within the architecture of discovery itself.

Rethinking How Therapies Reach Patients

Moving from discovery into therapeutic development, James Doyle, President and COO of Phocus Pharmaceuticals Inc., presented a different pathway to innovation—building rapid-acting therapies from molecules with established scientific foundations.

The approach highlighted the potential for intelligent reformulation and development strategies to create differentiated therapeutic opportunities while leveraging existing knowledge around proven molecules.

This intersection of scientific innovation and development efficiency could represent a particularly relevant area for Canada–Taiwan collaboration, bringing together Canadian therapeutic programmes with Taiwan's expanding capabilities across pharmaceutical development, manufacturing and commercialisation.

Precision Health Moves from Data to Action

The forum then turned towards translational and clinical innovation.

Bronwyn Bridges, CEO and Co-Founder of PragmaClin Research Inc., showcased an AI-powered platform for neurological assessment, illustrating how digital technologies could enable more objective, scalable and accessible approaches to evaluating neurological conditions.

The presentation also demonstrated the growing international potential of digital health technologies that can move beyond individual healthcare systems and support global clinical and commercial partnerships.

Taking precision health into another emerging frontier, Dr. Anmol Kapoor, Chairman and Founder of The BioSport Health Inc., presented a vision for a precision performance ecosystem integrating health data and personalised insights.

The discussion reflected a broader transformation underway across healthcare: precision technologies are moving beyond traditional clinical settings into prevention, performance and continuous health management.

Turning Collaboration into Action

A defining element of the Canada–Taiwan forum was its emphasis on what happens after introductions are made.

The programme included a dedicated discussion on the Canadian International Innovation Program (CIIP) and Taiwan's A+ Industrial Innovation R&D Program, providing companies with practical perspectives on mechanisms that can support international technology partnerships and joint research and development.

The afternoon's targeted B2B meetings further shifted the forum from presentation to partnership, creating opportunities for Canadian innovators and Taiwanese companies to explore potential collaborations directly.

For Taiwan, Canada's strengths in AI, biotechnology research, company creation and advanced therapeutic platforms offer access to a highly innovative North American ecosystem. For Canadian companies, Taiwan provides a strategically positioned partner with established capabilities in technology, manufacturing, healthcare innovation and access to wider Asian markets.

From Discovery to Impact

The breadth of technologies presented in Taipei demonstrated that the opportunity for Canada and Taiwan extends far beyond any single segment of biotechnology.

It lies in connecting complementary strengths across the entire innovation journey.

AI can help identify better therapeutic opportunities. Advanced platforms can turn discoveries into viable products. Clinical and digital technologies can bring greater precision to patient care. Funding frameworks can reduce barriers to international R&D. But ultimately, partnerships are what connect these individual capabilities and move innovation towards real-world impact.
